Adobe Flash End-of-Support 12-31-2020

Adobe End of Support Announcement

Adobe announced that it will end support of Flash Player on December 31, 2020. In response, all major browser suppliers have announced that Flash will be completely removed from their browsers by December 31, 2020.

Since all previous versions of Webalo Administrative Website relied on Adobe Flash and ActionScript technology to provide a dynamic configuration process for Webalo administrators, Webbalo kicked off a project in 2019 to respond to these announcements and to provide our customers with a seamless transition.

HTML 5.0 is able to deliver equivalent and, in many cases, superior application functionality with none of the risks that have been associated with Flash platform. As such, Flash has been replaced with HTML 5.0 as the underlying technology of the Administrative Website (AW) in starting with Webalo 6.0.x. The new 6.0 AW has almost identical functionality to the older Flash implementation but is much faster and has a refined new look.

The removal of Flash aligns Webalo with the market forces surrounding the end of life of Flash, improves the ease of use of the AW, and will simplify further development of new features of Webalo platform.

Impact of Adobe Flash End of Support Announcement to Webalo Customers

If you are planning for future upgrade releases of Webalo, a note about Adobe Flash end-of-support (EOS) is in order.  As we stated above all major browser suppliers have announced that Flash will be completely removed from their browsers by December 31, 2020. The removal will by and large be automatic as part of their standard update processes. If this occurs Flash will not be accessible to you.

If you are running any 5.x.x. Webalo Appliance after Dec. 31, 2020 you will require access to Adobe Flash to be able to use the Administrative Website to review and edit your app configurations.  If your company has locked down your browsers from upgrades, you may still be able to continue to access Flash for some period of time into the future beyond the EOS date. It would be prudent to have a conversation with IT about what will happen in your company after that date so you can plan you Webalo upgrades accordingly.

Webalo strongly recommends that you upgrade to  Webalo 6.0.x prior to the EOS date, you will not have a dependence on Flash to access the Administrative Website and have a smooth transition to all the newest Webalo 6.0.x functionality.

Webalo will continue to provide web, phone and email technical support for Webalo 5.3.x appliances that require Flash through June 2021, assuming that our customers found a way to keep Flash viable in their browsers.  Having said that, Webalo will not be adding features, or making enhancements to any 5.3.x builds after Jan 1, 2021.  All new bug and hot fixes will be targeted to Webalo 6.x.x releases after this date.

If you would like to discuss planning your upgrade to Webalo 6.x.x or if you have questions or concerns, please contact us at support@webalo.com.
